Q: What is merino wool and is it suitable for my little one?

Merino wool is a natural type of wool that comes from the merino sheep. It's known for its fine, soft fibres, which is why it's so often used for baby clothing and accessories. What makes merino wool special is that it's naturally temperature-regulating. It helps keep your baby warm when it's cold, and stops your baby from getting too hot when it's warmer. Wool is also breathable and absorbs moisture without feeling damp. Merino wool is a lovely choice for delicate baby skin, precisely because it's a natural material that moves with the body and adapts to the temperature. Magical, if you ask us!

Q: My woollies have just arrived – do I need to wash them?

No, in most cases washing isn't necessary. Wool is naturally self-cleaning and repels dirt and odours. Simply airing it is often enough to freshen up your woollies. If you do want to wash it at some point while using it, always follow the wool care instructions as described on our product pages.

Q: My woollen item is bobbling – is that normal?

Noticing some fluff after use? That's completely normal. Wool is made of fine fibres that sometimes need a little time to 'settle'. After a few wears or airings, it disappears on its own.

Q: My wool item smells a little – is that normal?

Wool can have a subtle, sheep-like scent. This comes from the natural lanolin in the fibres. Usually the scent fades on its own. When the item gets wet, the scent may temporarily come back a little. Does the scent linger? Then you can try the following: Let the item air outside for a few hours up to a day (ideally in fresh air, not in direct sunlight) Repeat this a few times rather than washing it straight away Avoid heat sources such as radiators or tumble dryers, as these can actually make the scent stronger In most cases, the scent will still fade after that. If you'd like to wash it, always follow the wool care instructions as described on our product pages.

Merino wool is often felt to be softer than other types of wool, but here too the item may feel a little “lively” or slightly prickly at first. That's perfectly normal and part of the natural character of wool. Wool has the lovely quality of becoming softer and more supple with use, body warmth and movement. After a few wears or uses, you'll often notice that the item moulds more to your little one and feels softer. For very sensitive skin, it can be nice to wear the woolly over a thin cotton layer at first. That way your baby can get used to the material at their own pace.

Babies and children grow fast. That can make finding the right size quite tricky at times, especially as every baby grows differently and sizing can vary from brand to brand.

Please note: especially with newborns, we often find that size 50 can come up quite large in the first few weeks. That's why, for our own collection, we recommend size 40/44 for the first weeks with your newborn.
